This semester will be a good one

I have collected some promising lectures & seminars that fit together in many ways and cover quite a few buzzwords, too.
First there is the lecture web services held by an ex-Telekom-person bringing in his experience from the pink T that got unfortunately infamous for its security measures within its customer relationship system that led to the T-Hack. … however that may be, this lecture is - in my schedule at least - accompanied by a seminar on semantic web and text technologies. The presentation I chose to do will cover how web ontologies interact and communicate with each other. I am not quite sure yet in which direction this will be heading due to the lack of much prior insight, but it sounds quite interesting. The lecture neural networks could maybe pose a conceptual extension to what web services are today.
Furthermore, there is a lecture on information and coding theory which will cover the rather technical aspects of signals and potential information. The introductory presentation introduced Shannon’s information theory stating that the information depends on the reciprocal of the probability of the event. That means the more you expect an event to happen, the smaller is the information content of the ‘signal’ telling it. Actually, quite intuitive. This topic is rounded off by a seminar on mass media and politics education covering information from a rather societal perspective.
Finally, there is a seminar on peace-keeping and another on collective identity labour (Kollektive Identitätsarbeit) which has not started yet. Both seminars seem to be good choices, too. We’ll see.

By the way: during some lectures/seminars I am taking notes on the computer which i might put on the wiki in the section Preparation of the Laboratory as i’ve done sporadically during prior semesters.

Google is watching us

.. well, of course we knew that. But literally, pretty soon webcams might be obsolete. They are tracking down the world. I was impressed when i saw google maps, but now (i haven’t noticed when exactly) they added sattelite data to it. Crazy. They have covered quite a lot regions of the U.S. in high resolution, the world has to wait. But Latin America incl. Cuba is quite detailed, too. So, if you have a minute to spare, take this trip.
