Stitching your redesigned commuter train

While we’re at it: panoramas can be very useful for all kinds of things. If you happen to be disgusted by the look of the commuter train you have to use every morning and decided to redesign it with your commuting friends (and got permission beforehand), of course, you would like to be able to show the results to your other friends from the internet. Something like this could have been the story for those Brazilians that have redone a complete train connecting Porto Alegre and São Leopoldo. To get a picture from the train they probably turned to some sort of stitching. Anyways, the results are really cool and the image above is just the first cart. Besides the huge panorama they have a lot of photo footage with details and nice black&white photography where only the graffiti parts are in color.

Panoramic all the way

After Ente has put up panoramas from our Sweden vacation i had to try it out, too, as i also took quite a lot panoramic pictures last summer. I found an elegant tool helping doing the stitching process for MacOSX. It is called DoubleTake and it worked really well. It worked that good, that i have played around with quite a few panoramas which i posted onto a designated wiki page.

Draw your query!

Retrievr

We have just talked about it in the Information Retrieval lecture and now there is a proof-of-concept using images from Flickr. Retrievr looks for images based on your drawings. Pretty cool, eh? And it is fun, too.

Fairy beauties with a sci-fi twist

Niko Henrichon’s site features some illustrations that are plainly gorgeous to look at. I also chose this picture as it really is a salient piece of them.

Kraftwerk and Transportation

Besides bikescape and Bike Talk there is The Bike Show, a third anglophone podcast covering bikes, cycling and mobility, as a whole. It is produced in Britain and describes itself as follows:

The Bike Show, broadcast on Resonance 104.4fm. A weekly show looking at the art, science, politics and transcendental pleasure of cycling, in London and further afied. From the Tour de France to Critical Mass, from cycle commuting to Kraftwerk…

I just listened to the episode on Kraftwerk and Cycling published August last year. The interesting thing is that the pioneers of electronic music have created such innovative music along the main theme of mobility with tracks like Autobahn, Trans Europe Express, and Tour De France covering cars, trains, and finally bikes as means of modern transportation.
