Web comics are a great way to escape the dullness of work for a moment. If you’re just starting to read a comic that has been around for some time, it is actually possible to spend an afternoon enjoying the development of characters’ personalities and the comic artists’ drawing skills while clicking through hundreds of comic strips. For the geeks, bicycling aficionados, and hip indie rockers among my dear readership, i can heartily suggest taking a look at xkcd, Yehuda Moon, and Questionable Content. Take your time.

Interactive Installations

I just stumbled upon these two interactive art installations by Uta Hinrichs and Holly Schmidt: memory [en]code and EMDialog. I think both projects showcase how interactive tabletops and large displays can be engaging and inviting in public settings. I am excited to see more of this. Snapshots or beauty in motion

I am kind of undecided about Flickr’s recent move to allow small video snippets. Quite a few members are at least not amused. Flickr sells the very short films as long photographs which seems kind of ridiculous at first. The video service Vimeo tries to focus on high-quality, original short movies. There i just went through some of Philip Bloom’s videos and they are amazing! Great perspectives, interesting people, wonderful colors, and good music. In particular, Autumn in Richmond, Piccadilly Furs, South Bank, and Kew Gardens. While only paying pro members can upload video on Flickr, i wonder if this approach towards video – videos are just photos that move up to 90 seconds – will attract such good videos, or better their makers. Right now the video group on Flickr is dominated by mostly snapshot videos.

Infographics disguised as flags

Icaro Doria came up with the great idea of using national flags to visualize social issues of different countries. The project Meet the World (larger images) was actually an advertising campaign for the Portuguese magazine Grande Reportagem.

Fotos vom Umsonstladen Lirumlarum

Jens macht weiterhin tolle Fotos auf Blipfoto. Heute hat er zum Beispiel Herrn Schneidewind vom Blumen- und Gemüsestand fotographiert. Auszerdem ist Jens auf Flickr aktiv. Da gibt es unter anderem tolle Aufnahmen aus dem Magdeburger Umsonstladen Lirumlarum. Dort fand sich auch das Gandhiposter, was mir die Ente einst schenkte und sich auf wunderbarer Weise im Umsonstladen an der Wand wiederfand. Desweiteren spielen dort nette Menschen mit kleinen Matruschkafiguren Schach oder schauen gemeinsam einen Film.

Retrofuturismus

Letzte Woche haben mich noch die retrofuturistischen Bilder von Klaus Bürgle fasziniert und vorgestern hat Tim einen Chaos Radio Express zu diesem Phänomen veröffentlicht (Blogeintrag), in dem er mit “Gregor Sedlag und Christian Heller über die Zukunft und warum Science Fiction Schnee von gestern ist”, spricht. Ich habe die Sendung noch nicht gehört, lade sie aber jetz auf mein tragbares MP3-Abspielgerät, damit ich auf den Weg nach South Dakota auch was spannendes zu hören hab. Frohe Weihnachten allerseits!

Verlassen und zerfallen

Im hiesigen Forum Gestaltung ist gerade die Wanderfotoausstellung Last & Lost – Bilder eines verschwindenden Europas zu sehen:

Es sind beeindruckende, Geschichte bewahrende und erzählende Bilder von Ruinen einer von Krieg und Vertreibung, industriellem Niedergang und zivilisatorischer Naturbeherrschung gekennzeichneten europäischen Epoche: Industriebrachen, leer stehende Dörfer, verfallene Kasernen, aufgelassene Grenzanlagen und nicht entzifferbare Grabinschriften.

MichH und ich haben uns heute die Ausstellung angeschaut. Es sind besonders sehenswerte Fotos dabei. Der Reiz des Verlassenem und Zerfallenem hat eine eigene Ästhetik, obgleich eine gewisse Traurigkeit mitschwingt. Was könnte mensch alles aus diesen Räumen entstehen lassen! Ich war ein wenig erinnert an die verlassenen Gleise der New Yorker Hochbahn.

Little Joe 2.0

Als Pausenbäcker zur Abizeit kennen gelernt. Als (Über)Lebenskünstler auch so manches von ihm gelernt. Während Joe schon länger eine Internetseite hatte, ist sie jetzt auch endlich bloggifziert – woran ich wohl eine gewisse Mitschuld trage. Dort schildert er seine Erlebnisse und Gedanken zwischenmenschlicher oder aber auch künstlerischer Natur. In der Werkstattrubrik z.B. schrieb er jüngst über ein zweirädriges Fahrzeug von einem anderen Stern, was ich letztens am letzten Freitag des Monats bewundern und auch benutzen durfte. Desweiteren sei auf Joes wunderbare Scherenschnittportraits verwiesen, die in der im Wiederaufbau begriffenen Galerie einzusehen sind. Ich bin gespannt auf zukünftiges Bloggen und Berichten über künsterischen Schaffens und Erlebnisse aus der “fahrrad-noch-nicht-ganz-untauglichen” Stadt.

Jetzt, da ich einige Prüfungen hinter mich gebracht habe, höre ich laut Regina Spektor begleitet von Klavier und Streichern und freue mich über ihre groszartigen Musikvideos mit Scherenschnitten in Samson, schwarz-weiszen Streifen- und Karomustern in Fidelity, Stop Motion in der Schule in On The Radio und Stop Motion auf Collagen in Us… Grosze Klasse.

Update: ich hab total vergessen, dass die Ente ja bereits vor fast einem halben Jahr über Regina Spektors Musikvideo für den Song Samson gebloggt hat. Der Vollständigkeit halber sei das hiermit erwähnt.

Migranten in Magdeburg

Morgen wird die Fotoausstellung Migranten in Magdeburg im einewelthaus (Schellingstraße 3-4) eröffnet, wo u.a. Fotos von hier bereits erwähnten Künstlern Jens und Kamran dabei sein werden. Die Ausstellung läuft vom 10.7. bis zum 31. August 2007.

Strandbeests by Theo Jansen

The Dutch kinetic artist Theo Jansen builds animal-like skeletons called strandbeests that move using wind energy. He said the wonderful sentence “The walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds” – unfortunately in a BMW-commercial. Kamran zeigt Magdeburger

Kamran Ali, der wie zuvor erwähnt Magdeburger sieht, zeigt nun einige seiner Fotos im Rahmen seiner Fotoausstellung “Vertraute Fremde” einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit. Diese wird am morgigen Donnerstag (21. Juni, 22 Uhr) zur Pakistanischen Nacht in der Hofgalerie Moritzhof eröffnet und bistimmt auch Gelegenheit bieten, dem begnadeten Fotographen ein Lob auszusprechen. Wobei er dann schüchtern lächeln wird, und so tut, also ob das nix wäre. Ich bin jedenfalls sehr von seinen Fotos beeindruckt, und werde mir sie mal ausgedruckt anschauen. Ich durfte letztens einen Blick auf ein paar Fotos werfen und kann verraten, dass sie ausgedruckt noch viel besser wirken.

Colors helping backup your HD-DVDs

The makers of the DRM mechanism for HD-DVDs really had a sense for how colors work in combination. The hexadecimal string of numbers that is used to decrypt a copy-protected HD-DVD can be turned into a very appealing set of colors. Jens sieht Calgary

Sozusagen Kamrans partner in crime in Sachen Fotographie, macht Jens sehr ästhetische Fotos und veröffentlicht sie auch sowohl auf Blipfoto als auch auf Flickr. Jetzt ist er für ein halbes Jahr nach Calgary für ein Praktikum im iLab gegangen und kann das nachholen, was ich letztens ein wenig vernachlässigt habe: schicke Fotos machen.

Kamran macht nun schon seit einiger Zeit ausdrucksstarke Fotos von Magdeburgern – egal ob Obdachlose, Migranten oder Reinigungskräfte: statt voyeuristische Fotos im Vorübergehen zu machen, nimmt er sich Zeit und lernt seine “Motive” kennen. Auf Kamrans Fotos behalten jene Menschen ihre Würde, für die wir sonst wenig Beachtung haben. Seine facettenreichen Fotos veröffentlicht Kamran auf Blipfoto und Flickr.

In the time of fully 3d animated movies i think stop motion videos constitute a very distinctively charming alternative. It’s mind boggling what people do with thousands of photo stills stringed together to stop motion goodness. Regardless if they do it with drawings, clay figures, or with photos from the ‘real world’. Baum vor Werbefläche

Bereits bei Joseph Beuys haben Bäume eine Schlüsselrolle bei seiner letzten, gröszten Skulptur gespielt. Dieses subversive Potenzial von Bäumen macht sich auch der Niederländer Helmut Smits mit einer Installation im öffentlichen Raum zu eigen, indem er eine grosze Werbefläche mit einem sauerstoffproduzierenden Wesen versieht. Wie auch Sebastian von Guerilla Innovation meint, ist das doch mal eine nette direkte Aktion mit Elementen des Adbustings und Guerilla Gardenings.

Abgesehen davon, dass ich da nur zustimmen kann und das Schablonengraffiti wirklich gelungen finde, ist noch anzumerken, dass in der spanischsprachigen Jugend-/Handysprache das @-Zeichen oftmals für die Sache des Gender Mainstreamings im Sprachgebrauch verwendet wird. Es ist ein wenig wie das Binnen-I blosz jünger und eleganter, da es feminine und maskuline Endung auf einfacher Weise ineinander vereinigt.

Desweiteren wäre vielleicht überhaupt das Wort wap@ hervorzuheben, dass wohl eine Pendant zum guap@ sein soll, das ich auch in Chile kennengelernt habe und so viel wie hübsch, schmuck, und süsz bedeutet.

Sechs Percussionisten vergehen sich an einer fremden Wohnung, um die dortigen Gebrauchsgegenstände für die Sache des Rhythmus zu missbrauchen. Mein Favorit ist ja das Badezimmer mit dem tiefen Bass der Badewanne gepaart mit scratchig verschwendetem Rasierschaum. Vorhang auf für Music for One Apartment and Six Drummers:

Der Webseite der schwedischen Filmemacher ist zu entnehmen, dass sie seit der Veröffentlichung des Kurzfilms 2001 schon jede Menge Preise dafür bekommen haben. Ich finde ja nicht ohne Grund.

Gullydeckel als Mandala

Beim Woostercollective findet sich dieses aus Blüten, Körnern und Kernen auf einem Gullydeckel gelegte Mandala, das mich an das Cafe Abarzua erinnert, wo die Ente und ich einst auch farbenfrohe Mandalas vorfanden.

Mechanics without a cause

We – Bubi, Joe and i – have ‘just’ talked about a mechanical apparatus that would be programmed to prepare coffee in the morning just like this breakfast machine in the first Back to the Future movie that even included preparing an egg. Well, now that we are living in the wonderful world of the web 2.0 we can get quite a lot of inspiration by viewing clips of Rube Goldberg machines. Bubi – a bright mechatronics student – has just send me this one where a tea bag is finally thrown into a cup – after detouring a marble around a labyrinth of things. I would like to add some Japanese jewels of Rube Goldberg machines with impressive mechanics, materials, and music. More of these kinda things on Google Video or YouTube. DIY at its best.

Sozialkritik und Salsapolka nach Sonnenuntergang

Zwar fand die Premiere schon im Februar statt, doch möchte ich trotzdem noch auf das im Magdeburger Schauspielhaus aufgeführte soziale Drama von Gerhart Hauptmann hinweisen: Vor Sonnenaufgang. Gnadenlos adaptiert die Inszenierung das 1889 geschriebene Stück auf das Hier und Jetzt und dokumentiert naturalistisch scheinbar zeitlose Zustände wie zum Beispiel die Entfremdung durch Lohnarbeit, die Dekadenz des Kapitals und die Flucht in den Alkoholismus. Über den ‘Journalisten und Sozialreformer’, Alfred Loth, wird aber auch inmitten dieser Zustände an progressivere Diskurse der Gegenwart wie Medienaktivismus, bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen und ein Leben jenseits der Festanstellung angeknüpft. Das Stück wird dieses Jahr noch am 24. November und 15. Dezember aufgeführt und sei hiermit empfohlen.

Desweiteren möchte ich noch G.Rag y Los Hermanos Patchekos erwähnt und empfohlen wissen, die gestern nach der Aufführung das Publikum mit Salsapolka und Countrywalzer eingeheizt haben. Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, mussten sie drei Zugaben geben, ehe das scheinbar ausgehungerte Publikum die Münchener nach Hause gehen liesz. Grosze Klasse. Ganze Stücke und nen Video zum Kennen- und Mögenlernen gibt es auch, wo bei Gefallen auch konsumiert werden darf.

Straszenverschönerungskunst wieder besucht

Wenn die Liste der Weblogs, die mensch abonniert hat, dermaszen lang wird, dass mensch nicht mehr hinterherkommt sie regelmäszig zu lesen, dann ist das Erwachen grosz, wenn auf einmal über 200 ungelesene Beiträge sich drin verstecken. Im Falle des Wooster Collectives ist das Erwachen darüber hinaus auch sehr inspirierend und beglückend. So zeichnen die letzten Beiträgen ein sehr lebendiges Bild von Straszenverschönerungskunst (lies: streetart), wie sie sich weiterentwickelt und ständig neu erfindet. Oft kommen dabei sehr praktische Videoschnipsel herum, die mensch auch als Handlungsanleitungen, Hinterdiekulissenblicke bzw kleine Ratgeber betrachten kann. Bei der Fülle gilt es dann aber auch, nicht versoimen rauszugehen, das neu Gelernte in die Tat umzusetzen und dann bei Erfolg auch Wooster Collective davon wissen zu lassen.

Extending exposure

I really enjoy doing nightshots these days. In fact, i have used my camera (canon ixus 400, sometimes also sold as powershot or elph) almost exclusively with the extended exposure feature lately. I am sure other digicams have it, too. So instead of walking my camera during the day, i get her out during night. The colors are so much different. If you have a (digital) camera at hand you should really try it out. The ‘technique’ is dead simple:

Wait until it’s dark outside. You could read a book or talk to your flatmates in the meanwhile.
Walk around your neighborhood and find a nice scene to take a picture of.
Extend the exposure time according to need or gusto.
Place your camera on a steady surface, e.g. the ground. Tripods are also great, but not always at hand.
Do it. Take the picture.

Too easy. It is all about experimenting with your photographic device. But just a few more notes, to get you kick started:

Color the sky. Cool effects are possible with the sky being almost black. With extended exposure it will turn red, purple and/or blue.
Let it rain. Wet surfaces will make your result far more colorful.
Cars suck. But when it comes to nightshots they add the essential effect of red and yellow light lines.
Do it often. Take more than one picture of a given scene with different exposure levels. This way you decide later what suits you best.
Money, money. Use some coins to adjust the angle, especially if you put the camera on the ground.

Those nightshots that i’ve uploaded to Flickr have not been edited in any way. It’s just extra long exposure goodness. If anybody reading this has some results, please leave a link. I reeaally like nightshots. Ooops, its getting dark outside. Gotta go.

Wooster Collective is the place to visit and subscribe to, if you want to learn about the zeitgeist of street art. The special charme of the site is that they get the community involved to create the appearance of the blog. Reguarly they change the logo banner on top of the page, so that the site itself becomes art. Those ‘mastheads‘ reflect the tools, styles and attitudes of the community. It never gets boring.

By the way, the anti-graffiti forces here are not as fast or rigorous as in Madrid where i had a hard time finding any stencils. Until now i have found many witty stencils and other pieces of street art in Santiago.

Zoomsteppdecke

Zufällig bin ich auf dieses groszartige Kunstprojekt gestoszen: Zoomquilt. Die Idee ist kurz erzählt, aber doch so genial: Der Betrachter zoomt fortwährend in das Gemälde wie in einen Tunnel hinein, so dass der Eindruck entsteht, mensch würde sich in dem Bild vorwärts bewegen. Die verschiedenen Schritte wurden von 15 Künstlern umgesetzt, so dass ein vielfältiger Weg aufgespannt wurde, der sich unendlich fortsetzt, da es weder Ende noch Anfang gibt. Sehr cool. Es gibt eine längere Waldphase, die mich ein wenig an das Simulationsprojekt ‘Prinz rettet Prinzessin’ erinnert hat. Blosz dass die Pflanzen und Bäume im Wald von Zoomquilt gefährlicher und gefräsziger wirken. Wegweisendes Element ist der abstrakte, orangene Schlauch.

Ich bin über den Mac OS X Bildschirmschoner darauf gestolpert. Auf der Zoomquilt-Seite gibt es auch einen für Windows, darüberhinaus eine Flash- und HTML-Variante. Falls die Links nicht funktionieren, ist mensch angewiesen die Seite zu aktualisieren. Für Linux gibts bestimmt auch nen ‘Port’. Wenn nicht, ist der sicher schnell gehackt, oder Bubi?

Gestern durfte ich die jetzt schon viel gröszere Charlotte durch den Nordpark begleiten. Ich habe sie nämlich babygesittet, während ihr Papa einen wichtigen Vortrag hielt. Der Nordparkausflug war für uns beide sehr entspannend. Charlotte hat geschlafen und ich auf einer Parkbank in der Sonne gedöst. Später gab es noch Fleischbrei und Spiele – für Charlotte.

Velorutionary immobility

The urban jungle confronts the dear bicyclist with many situations causing stress and anger. Just consider the large amount of combustion powered species directed by madmen on their way to work. So there need to be times when the velorutionary gets a little rest after long hours of biking through this unfriendly environment. Yet, of course the true bicyclist is intensely attached to the gear that keeps her mobile. So she turns to bike furniture: furniture that retains the spirit of freedom and mobility even in the rather immobile moments through the clever use of specific materials such as handlebars, frames, fellies, and tires.

La Bohème

Wir hatten unseren Eltern und uns Karten für die Oper La Bohème im hiesigen Theater zu Weihnachten geschenkt. Bekommen haben wir ein Fest für Sinn und Geist. Klingt pathetisch, aber ich war wirklich schwer beeindruckt — von dem Stück und der Darbietung. Sicher, in puncto Opern bin ich gänzlich unbedarft, aber das sollte sich von nun an ändern. Ich war beeindruckt, wie die Opernsänger/-darsteller sowohl Gesang als auch Schauspiel so gekonnt kombinierten. Auch hat mich die Geschichte der armen Pariser Künstler (oder: der Bohème) sehr berühert, die trotz Armut eine Leichtigkeit lebten, die erst durch den Tod einer Freundin in eine schwere Tragik umschlägt.

Schade ist, dass diese Art von Kultur nur privilegiertere Teile der Gesellschaft erreicht. Ich habe letztens gehört, dass Theaterhäuser zunehmend darauf insofern reagieren, als dass Vergünstigungen für Hartz4-Empfänger angeboten werden. Das finde ich gut. Bin mir nicht sicher, ob das hier in Magdeburg gemacht wird. Als Student habe ich 14,50 € gezahlt. Ich kann’s mir leisten. Ich bezweifle aber, ob es unbedingt nur der Preis ist. Das Fernsehen als Unterhaltungsmedium hat die Kultur doch verdrängt — nehmen wir mal Arte raus. Wenn alles Unterhaltung ist, ist nix mehr Kunst. Und dann ist es egal ob sie als Spiegel oder Hammer jene Welt verlässt. Reflexion und Utopie werden im Meer der Belanglosigkeiten ertränkt.

This is a beautiful, unofficial music video for the song Jed’s Other Poem (Beautiful Ground) by Grandaddy. It was “programmed [by Steward Smith] in Applesoft II on a 1979 Apple ][+ with 48K of RAM. Seriously.” Very cool.

‘You can create art and beauty with a computer’ stays valid no matter how old the computer in question is. Which reminds me of the chaos communication congress which is only a month and a few days away.

Sam Weber und seine Wesen

Ein wenig gruselig und melancholisch zugleich sind die Gemälde von Sam Weber. Sie zeigen Menschen und ähnliche Kreaturen in Gruppen oder isoliert, die entfremdet und animalisch daher kommen. Sie wirken wie Unterwasserwesen, die das Licht und die Luft nicht ertragen, und auf der Stelle ausbluten, oder wie Menschen die ihrer Menschlichkeit beraubt wurden und nicht anders können. Diese Stimmung wird in manchen Bildern erzeugt durch eine zumeist schwache Andeutung von räumlicher Tiefe und die Verwendung von matten Tönen, bis auf einige Signalfarben, wie Orange oder Rot. Schaurig schön. Zu empfehlen ist übrigens auch sein Skizzenbuch mit vielen scharfen Schwarz-Weisz-Zeichnungen.

Der Wortwitz des Titels dieses Zeichentrickkurzfilms (.mov, 24 MB) von Jonathan Klassen lässt sich leider nicht ins Deutsche übertragen. Ist aber auch nicht notwendig. Der Film steht auch für sich. Er verzichtet ganz auf gesprochene Sprache und lässt das musikalische Thema vom Bruder Jakob wohl über eine Querflöte mehrmals anklingen.

The face of Layyah

Kamran, a friend i got to know in a philosophy course on symbols and language, had been in his home country Pakistan lately, where he took wonderful pictures of his hometown Layyah. These are sharp and moving portraits of local people and scenes of the town. Kamran added captions with his thoughts on those pictures.

Stippled Heads

About two years ago i have attended a weekend seminar on non-photorealistic rendering and information visualization seeking a closer connection between both areas. In one of the npr presentations halftone portraits intended for print were shown, where the difference in lighting was not resembled by an edge through thresholding (as the quote icons on this site) but through a technique that used different widths of lines to approximate the original shading of the portrait. Aside from being actually a very old method, portraits or pictures in general featuring such type of halftoning look very sexy. The thing is: the lines not only change in width, their orientation and curvature bears also hints of how the depicted object is shaped.

There are ways of doing this by image processing and npr software as presented in Victor Ostromoukhov’s article on “Digital Facial Engraving” (PDF) in 1999. Another approach would involve manual labor as Noli Novak is doing it for the Wall Street Journal, not essentially a newspaper i would read, yet the portraits are gorgeous, even though the depicted people are mostly business bigwigs or bureaucrats. Another illustrator for the WSJ is Kevin Sprouls who has some nice illustrations on his page (see image).

Going fishing to the moon

A very promising work-in-progress of a computer animated movie about a girl going to the moon by holding on to a fishing rod or: about a boy doing that and meeting the moongirl there? I really like the symbiotic relationship between the hero(ine) and the glowworms.
