Guerilla Gardening kommt nach Magdeburg

Jedenfalls wünschen sich das die Gartenguerrilleros Gregor Schneider (Stadtplaner) und Oliver Schilling (Architekt) von Raum391. Um diesem Anliegen weiter Anschub zu verleihen, gab es heute Abend im ÖZIM einen Vortrag (Ankündigung auf WebUni), den ich verpasst habe, und der Blog zur Bewegung ist auch schon eingerichtet. Auf dem Blog liest mensch dann auch, was die Motivation ist: “Wir sind Bürger. Wir haben Pflichten. WIR SIND MAGDEBURG.” Dann kann dem Partisanenkampf für ein noch grüneres, bunteres und schöneres Magdeburg ja nix im Wege stehen. Die Blumenbewegung sucht auch Sponsoren und zu bestellen sind die Gartenguerrilleros auch noch.

Guerilla Gardening ist eine feine Sache, aber ebenso wie gutes Graffiti und Streetart bedarf es keine eingeschworene Öffentlichkeit oder Sponsoring dazu, sondern die klandestine Aktion und das dazugehörige subversive und kreative Potenzial. Wie Schneider und Schilling aber das urbane Gärtnern anpreisen, erinnert eher an Sauberkeitskampagnen der Magdeburger Stadtverwaltung. Der Witz (lies: die Tragik) ist doch, dass Schönheit blumenverzierter Verkehrsinseln oder Sauberkeit hundekotbefreiter Gehwege die gesamtgesellschaftliche Scheisze unberührt lassen. Sicher, wenn wir uns beim gemeinsamen urbanen Gärtnern besser kennen lernen, ist das schon mal etwas. Blumenbeete sind toll, keine Frage. Aber was ist mit Ernährung? Brachflächen ungefragt aufzuhübschen ist nett… Ist es aber möglich darauf Gemeinschaftsgärten zu starten? Wie war das noch mal mit Privateigentum? Welche Rolle spielt freies Saatgut im agrarindustriellen Kontext? Ich bin gespannt, was sich aus der Idee hier in Magdeburg ergibt. Aber es kann beim Guerilla Gardening um mehr gehen als ums Aufhübschen öder Innenstädte.

An evening out of town

Yesterday we took our bikes and left all concrete behind to have a picknick along the river of the city we inhabit. Although windy and cloudy at first, it turned into an enjoyable evening. The girls and social scientists teams won in Boule against the teams of the boys and engineers–if you permit fuzzy borders and some overlap. Thanks everybody for joining in. Uwe found it to be a paradise-like place and took some beautiful photos.

The special role of urban planning

Today it occurred to me (again) that urban planning and city lifestyle weaves itself like a red thread through many contemporary issues. In the previously mentioned CBC radio programme it was discussed that among other factors, the location where one lives in the city and the fact whether certain services and shops are within walkable (or public transport) distance seem to have quite an impact on one’s health and happiness. Tonight the editor and founder of WorldChanging Alex Steffen gave an inspiring and motivating talk about interesting ideas for how to address global warming and the general disconnect between humankind and earth. Check out his TED talk on similar things. He talked about all kinds of ideas, products and services that make a contribution by contributing less waste or emissions and by using up less resources. Great examples are sharing of cars, tools, and even handbags. When asked what he considers the three major innovations, he responded with a list of interventions and named urban planning as the first one. While i am not sure whether it is interesting what some urban planners are doing, i certainly think that what they should be doing is worth taking a closer look.

Eigentlich weise ich nicht noch einmal auf Kommentare hin, weil es hier normalerweise auch nicht so viele davon gibt. Das ist hier ja nur eine kleine Insel verschrobener Gedanken oder so. Aber: in der Diskussion mit Holodoc zu den Helden auf Fahrrädern hat sich I was born under a wandering star zu Wort gemeldet und triftige Gründe zusammengetragen, warum es sich lohnt Fahrrad zu fahren. Ich zitiere diese hier, damit sie nicht untergehen:

Liebe Skeptiker, es geht beim Retten der Erde nicht alleine ums CO2, auch wenn das jetzt gerade mal besonders häufig in den Medien besprochen wird, sondern um Umweltschutz allgemein:

um die Faktoren, wie Anarchitect schon angesprochen hat (lokale Produkte konsumieren usw.)

um erheblich verringerte Energie- und Materialmengen in der Produktion eines Fahrrades im Vergleich zum Automobil

um die Verhinderung des weiteren Zubetonierens von Landschaft zum Füttern des Mobilitätsgötzen “motorisierter Individualverkehr”

darum zu verhindern, dass millionen von Tier- und Pflanzenarten ausgelöscht werden

um die Verhinderung von Kriegen um den Energieträger Erdöl

um Gesundheitsaspekte: wer sich den ganzen Tag nicht bewegt und dann abends mit dem PKW nachhause fährt, lebt ungesünder und denkt weniger klar und benötigt vermutlich später im Alter einen teuren und energieaufwändigen Fuhrpark, um seine eingeschlafenenen Lebensfunktionen zu reanimieren

um das Bewusstsein, dass man sich auch im näheren Lebensumfeld gesund bewegen kann und nicht erst (überspitzt geschrieben) mit dem Flieger nach Tibet fliegen muss (hohe C02-Emission!), um sich dann im Himalaya auszupowern

um eine Wertschätzung der eigenen Lebensenergie und der Ressourcen des Umfeldes: kein großkotziges “Think Big”-Gehabe. Ein dicker Schlitten allein macht noch keine Persönlichkeit

Kurz: durch Radfahren und die Bewegung an der (dann wieder verstärkt) frischen Luft wird der Tunnelblick des PKW-Fahrers geweitet…

Two days ago this strangely different version of Clocks was played in Projekt 7 at the FGSE party and i find the corresponding video quite appealing. It addresses some environmental issues and in my eyes shows that talking about climate change is not meant to spread fear but hope. The idea is to spread the will to make a difference where there has been mostly denial and ignorance. But i guess this is just my wishful interpration of the video. The song is part of the remix sampler Rhythms del Mundo.

Reclaim democracy

Die Gegenaktivitäten zum G8-Gipfel sind bereits in vollem Zuge und die Ente notiert dazu passend Brechts Moldaulied “Es wechseln die Zeiten”. Tatsächlich passen die Zeilen – wenn mensch es wahr haben will – auch auf die nächsten Tage.

Vertreter gewisser mächtiger Staaten des Nordens verbarrikadieren sich in einem Luxushotel am Ostseestrand, um sich der Weltpolitik anzunehmen, während sie bis heute beweisen, dass sie nicht den politischen Willen haben, Armut, Umweltzerstörung und Krieg wirklich zu bekämpfen. Wie sonst lässt sich erklären, dass der globale Norden keine effektiven Masznahmen ergreift, um die Handelsbedingungen für schwächere Marktteilnehmer zu begünstigen, globale Erwärmung aufzuhalten oder die weitere Ausbreitung von Klein- und Massenvernichtungswaffen einzudämmen? Entscheider, die diese Situation mit zu verantworten haben, dürfen nicht in Ruhe gelassen werden.

Wenn sich Regierungen als willenlos und inkompetent erweisen, die Herausforderungen der Zeit zu erkennen, müssen soziale Bewegungen die nötigen Veränderungen herbeiführen und überkommene Strukturen überwältigen. Viele Menschen machen sich auf den Weg nach Rostock und Heiligendamm, um Unmut und Utopie zu teilen und zu artikulieren. Dass diese Menschen aus so verschiedenen Kontexten wie Kirchen, Gewerkschaften, Vereinen und Bürgerinitiativen von Politik und Medien als gewaltbereite Chaoten disqualifizert werden, zeigt wie stark die Achtung demokratischen Handelns in der politischen und medialen Klasse gesunken ist.

Ich bin der Meinung, dass der G8-Gipfel ein Relikt aus alten Zeiten war, das es nicht mehr aufrechtzuerhalten gilt. Die Strukturen, die dieser Gipfel symbolisiert, stehen den Prinzipien von Demokratie, Solidarität und Frieden stark entgegen und oft auch im Weg. Die Lösung der globalen Probleme liegt nicht hinter dem Sicherheitszaun, sondern in den vielen offenen Camps und diskursiven Foren während dieses Gipfels aber auch zu vielen anderen Gelegenheiten.

Während die globalisierungskritische Bewegung dem Gipfel die Legitimation abspricht, befindet sich die politische Klasse bereits in der Sinnkrise. Daher lohnt es sich nicht, an diese konfuse Gruppe von Menschen, die sich nicht der Perversion dieses Treffens bewusst wird, Forderungen zu stellen, während schon längst neue Praktiken jenseits der verbrannten Erde konventioneller Politik und Ökonomie entstehen.

Das Große bleibt groß nicht und klein nicht das Kleine.

Ökosexualität und Rehe

Nachdem ich hier schon stencilistisch mit fast linguistischen Ausschweifungen argumentiert habe, dass radfahrende Menschen attraktiver sind, manifestiert sich nun die über uns hereinbrechende Umweltbewusstseinsrevolution in gesprochener oder zumindest gebloggter Sprache im Fachbereich Sexualität/Partnersuche. Denn: der modebewusste (noch-)Single ist in diesen Tagen nicht metrosexuell sondern ökosexuell. Es zählt nicht mehr nur Hirn, Humor und gewisse Äuszerlichkeiten. Eine besondere Beziehung zur Natur ist gefragt.

Am kommenden Mittwoch gibt es eine Gelegenheit in Magdeburg sich öffentlich ökosexuell zu geben: der Vortrags- und Filmabend (Eine unbequeme Wahrheit/Inconvenient Truth) organisiert von der hiesigen Grünen Hochschulgruppe (GHG), von der mensch just in Zeiten des Hochschulwahlkampfs einiges hört. Komisch.

Apropos Natur, GHG und so: das GHG-Wahlplakat für die Gremienwahlen hat ein Reh drauf, das man findet wenn man via Google nach Rehbildern sucht. Es ist zufälligerweise ein Reh von einem Stencilsticker aus Stockholm, das ich auch dort angetroffen hatte. Bei matt wie glaenzend gibt es eine noch bessere Variante, die mensch glatt als Stencilvorlage oder Wahlplakat nehmen könnte. Mensch müsste allerdings vorher fragen, weil die Urheberin ausdrücklich auf ihrer Seite schreibt: “Das Reh sowie alle anderen Bilder dürfen nicht genutzt werden.” Hmm…

Will the bees leave us alone on this planet? The recent phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder suggests that bees are not necessarily here to stay. While the definite cause for the CCD has not been found exzessive employment of pesticides and genetically modified crops are counted as some possible causes.

Albert Einstein once said: “If honey bees become extinct, human society will follow in four years.” Apart from that sweet honey all those busy bees produce, they are essential for a lot of food we eat, as they undertake the job of pollination.

Baum vor Werbefläche

Bereits bei Joseph Beuys haben Bäume eine Schlüsselrolle bei seiner letzten, gröszten Skulptur gespielt. Dieses subversive Potenzial von Bäumen macht sich auch der Niederländer Helmut Smits mit einer Installation im öffentlichen Raum zu eigen, indem er eine grosze Werbefläche mit einem sauerstoffproduzierenden Wesen versieht. Wie auch Sebastian von Guerilla Innovation meint, ist das doch mal eine nette direkte Aktion mit Elementen des Adbustings und Guerilla Gardenings.

Wer hat Angst vor der Umweltzone?

Als ich in Santiago war, wurden im Frühstücksfernsehen die Fahrbeschränkungen angesagt, die sich danach richteten, wie hoch die Smogbelastung war. Meistens war sie sehr hoch. Da gegen die Feinstaubauflagen in vielen deutschen Städten im letzten Jahr verstoszen wurde, planen viele Gemeinden nun – ab März – sogenannte Umweltzonen einzurichten. Ökotest hat Details zur Regelung der Umweltzonen. Die hiesige FDP zeigt sich schon mal skeptisch mit sachlichem Verweis darauf, dass doch die ganzen Kunden mit dem Auto in die Innenstadt zum Einkaufen kommen und: “Insbesondere für größere Einkäufe gebe es zum Auto keine Alternative.” Hmm, wenn ich die von Joris letztens vorgestellten muskelbetriebenen Fahrzeuge so vor dem inneren Auge vorbeiziehen sehe, würde ich das ja glatt in Frage stellen. Der Witz ist ja, dass die meisten auch für kleine Einkäufe das feinverstaubtmotorisierte Fahrzeug vorziehen.

The day will come

I was going to blog about that some weeks ago, and now that cybernotic was faster, i just add some quick thoughts. There seems to be a wave of (influential and advanced) Mac users switching away from the Mac as Apple gets bigger and starts doing Microsoftish things. The two articles that started this discourse were by Mark Pilgrim and Cory Doctorow. The main reasons stated for leaving the Mac behind were the decreasing quality of Apple software and that the data created or maintained with this software often becomes an “undocumented binary black hole” as Mark has put it.

I am still happy in regard to the software. Mac developers eat usabilty every morning with their breakfast so that the software i use allows me to be pleasantly productive – apart from my daily procrastination. Even though Apple seems to become more evil on some parts, they still have the lead in designing an innovative system with the user in mind.

I would be happier if all my personal belongings (e.g. pim data) would be stored in well-documented xml, so that staying with the Mac is not a matter of a vendor lock-in. Of course it would be also cool if we see some more open sourcing – not very likely.

I would be a lot happier if Apple would turn itself into a self-ruled collective where the designers, programmers and factory workers work under fair conditions with a good pay – not at all likely. Furthermore the side-effects on the environment and world regions in crisis need to be considered when producing computer hardware. Yet those latter complaints also count within the Linux world (more on this here).

Right now i don’t have the patience to switch, but i am sure the day will come. The FLOSS world has quite a few things to offer. The most obvious is the open nature of a thriving community that is devoted to creating software. While Mac fans get nervous (incl. me) waiting for the next keynote by Steve Jobs to listen to his words, the open source community gets work done through a compellingly open process. While Mac OS X still is technically more innovative, Linux & Co is socially, politically, and economically far more progressive.

Free Software and Anarchism

Sandro Gaycken has given a clarifying talk at the last Chaos Communication Congress (22C3) comparing the quality of free software with anarchist theory. He starts out with the obvious similarities between those two concepts: consensus decision making and flat/no hierarchies. Furthermore both, free software and anarchism, are regularily defamed as being complete disorder and distruction of all human values. While those rather colloquial similarities might hold, he argues that looking more closely shows that free software today is based on a lot of assumptions that wouldn’t be counted as ‘valid anarchism’:

production of computer hardware is connected to hierarchies, centralization, pollution, and exploitation
engagement in the free software process poses great requirements: investment of money for hardware, skills to understand programming, and specialists for maintenance.

He also states that the “legal games” (read: rules) around Creative Commons and the GPL would barely count as anarchistic. While a person of the audience added that GPL and such should rather be seen as weapons to defend the realm of open source against capitalism Gaycken responds that these weapons when employed are turned against one self one day. He compares them with the historic ‘compromises’ such as in the Soviet Union that led to the enslavement of millions of people – advertised as a transitional phase until capitalism has vanished once and for all.

Gaycken surely takes a purist approach to differentiate between anarchist theory and free software, yet i don’t see this as an end in itself. While free/open source software is a great thing it is worth noting that it (still) has quite a bit of negative implications for emancipation and the environment. In this respect i understand his talk as an eye opener: we need to pay more attention to the exclusive, polluting, and otherwise malicious context of seemingly emancipatory technology.

Aren’t bicyclists exposed to far more air pollution? Nope.

Intuitively this seems odd, but a whole range of studies ’suggest’ that car-drivers are exposed to much more traffic-related air pollution. Exemplary is the research of Kingham, Meaton, et al. from 1998 with the following findings neatly compiled at the Sprawl and Health blog:

The car driver had the highest mean exposure to benzene (108.3 micrograms/m^3) a factor of at least 4 and also the highest mean exposure to particulates (7.6 absorbance), but by a much smaller margin.

Train riders had the lowest benzene exposure (12.9) and path cyclists had the lowest particulate exposure (2.7).

The bus was slightly better than the road bike

The exposure ratios for the car driver to the road cyclist were 4.05 for benzene and 1.26 for particulates.

The exposure ratios for the road cyclist to the path cyclist were 1.73 for benzene and 2.41 for particulates.

While i am taking the bike here in Santiago – not necessarily the friendliest place for bicyclists – i am exposed to a lot of fumes, but this counts just as well for every Santiaguino. Motorists surely are worsening the situation for everybody, yet they hurt themselves even more. When i am preaching that more people should take the bike relieving the local air situation and doing exercise at the same time i often got the respond that one would breath too much air pollutants. Now i can counter that cheap excuse with tough, scientifically backed research. Watcha say now?!

Dirty lungs and the oil price

In Chile – as in the rest of the world – we see a growing discomfort among motorists about the rising gas prices. Here in Santiago this translates also to demonstrations by people that are either relying on or are plainly used to take the car. This seems to me a bit ironical. Every other day we have air pollution warnings by the government limiting the (legal) use of special kinds of vehicles so that the smog level doesn’t get ‘too unhealthy’. On the contrary the demonstrating motorists are asking for lowering the gas taxes arguing that a great part of the economy relies on this very combustion based transport. The government should help out since those transcendent causes hit the economy and the middle class – which both ought to be protected. In fact Chile is seeing price increases in different product categories ranging from bread to bus transit because of higher gas prices. While this argument surely has some basis, i would argue that the decline of fossil fuels is not that unforeseen. Peak Oil is not a myth. People know that fossil fuels neither last forever nor are ubiquitously found. In fact there are people dying everday in conflicts related to oil.

Therefore i think economy and society needs to develop and adopt new ways of undertaking transport. As capitalist economy is rather interested in making a quick buck than investing in long term goals it is probably up to governments to encourage (read: subsidize) change. But than politicians are rather in it for the next election and not the welfare of future generations. Which leads me to the conclusion that true environmental change can only happen from below, from the people choosing whether they take the SUV or the metro to get to work. Furthermore there is a need for a broad social movement for environmental change to demand more alternative transport and energy.

Here in Chile the beginning of such movements can be seen: ranging from objecting Pascua Lama to demanding urban cycle tracks. It is very promising to see an increasing number of people challenging car and combustion culture. Chile has just experienced one of the greatest social movements in a long time. The students demanding profound change in education had and still have broad support in Chilean society. Change is possible - but it is unlikely to be initiated by politics nor economy.

Penguins: giving mankind a helping wing

The Ente has been in Venice for presenting a paper at a conference. While she was there she has taken marvellous photos (the last 9 galleries). I would especially like to point the reader’s attention to the streetart set which i enjoyed quite much.

If you haven’t noticed yet: the penguins are plotting and doing the world revolution. Here in Chile we have seen the greatest social movement in 30 years undertaken by high school students – colloquially referred to penguins due to their school uniforms – demanding an education accessible to everyone. Furthermore the open source community – with the famous penguin Tux as its charismatic leader – proofs that the production of value and knowledge needs to be open and accessible. And ultimately we have penguins showing up on walls all over to underline the greatest revolution of mankind – undertaken by their black-and-white counterparts. Besides stepping into their claw steps we finally need to stop global warming to acknowledge these magnificient deeds.

Start a community garden near you now

Hooray for growing your own veggies, fruits, and flowers while building community by doing it with your friends and neighbors. In North America there seems to be a whole movement of community gardening going on that is very interesting to watch and inspires to do it, too. My good compañero Stan based in South Dakota is engaged in it just like many others environmentally and politically conscious people.

Community gardening is not only about getting cheaper and better food. It gets you literally into touch with mother earth and teaches you about seasonal nutrition. Even though the Food Coop in Magdeburg is not necessarily – or maybe just not yet – a community garden I have learned a lot about food and think more conscious about food now. Here in Santiago i haven’t found a food or garden collective yet, but i haven’t looked investigated thoroughly yet.

I learnd via dh love life a charming green video podcast about the South Central Farmers a Los Angeles based community garden that is active for 14 years. Its contract is expiring and it is threatened to be bulldozered and replaced by a big box. I’m sending love and hope that they continue their work.

Das ÖZIM braucht deine Hilfe

[Logo und Foto auf Wunsch entfernt.] Das erste Mal habe ich es als Ort für manche Geburtstagsfeierlichkeiten und das zweite Mal als Heim der Magdeburger Food Coop kennengelernt: das Ökologische Zentrum und Institut Magdeburg, kurz: ÖZIM. Seit 1991 werden dort allerhand naturschutzbezogene Projekte und Initiativen unternommen. Wie ich das von auszen sehe, ist es in den letzten Monaten ein wenig ruhiger geworden. Das soll sich nun wieder ändern. Auf Webuni gibts einen Aufruf zur Aktivierung neuer Mitstreiter:

Ökologisches Bauen und regenerative Energien sind nur zwei der Themen, die in Zukunft auf der Agenda des Vereins stehen sollen. Gesucht werden deshalb engagierte, ambitionierte und initiativ und tatkräftige Menschen, die Ideen und Visionen haben.

Sich zu ärgern alleine bringt nichts!

Wenn Dir etwas gegen den Kram geht, Du Dich bilden oder selbst forschen oder einfach nur für einen guten Zweck einbringen möchtest… MELDE DICH!
