Web comics are a great way to escape the dullness of work for a moment. If you’re just starting to read a comic that has been around for some time, it is actually possible to spend an afternoon enjoying the development of characters’ personalities and the comic artists’ drawing skills while clicking through hundreds of comic strips. For the geeks, bicycling aficionados, and hip indie rockers among my dear readership, i can heartily suggest taking a look at xkcd, Yehuda Moon, and Questionable Content. Take your time.

On my old email address (word at anarchitect dot org) i get a lot of spam these days. So i thought i discontinue it, as i don’t use it that often anymore anyway. I added this auto-reply so that my contacts that don’t have my new address are directed to the right location and nasty spammers would not just parse it from the auto-reply message:

I have suspended using this Email address.
Please, go to my contact page to get in touch with me.
Thanks for your understanding!

…………………………………………………..

I habe dieses Emailadresse eingestellt. Um mit mir in
Kontakt zu tretten, benutze bitte dieses Formular.
Vielen Dank für dein Verständnis!

…………………………………………………..

Terminé usar esa e-mail. Por favor, visite esta pagina
para poner en contacto conmigo.
Gracias por tu comprensión.

Only problem is that spammers use existing sender addresses they found on the Web. Hence, my auto-responder would automatically increase spam-caused traffic and annoyances for those whose email address was hijacked. Therefor i will just discontinue the mailbox silently and hope that people that want to reach me would remember my name and search for it and would somehow come to this page.

And by the way: this is, of course, proof of my capitulation to the state of email these days. It seems as if email is broken, yet, it still works well enough considering its importance and relevance in professional and personal communication. May somebody have mercy and fix it?

If you are involved in Web development in any way there is usually a point in the timeline of a project where you want to see what our dear Internet Explorer is doing with the pages that have worked just fine in your browser of choice and even for the W3C’s validators. Well, if you happen to be using a non-Windows platform chances are that you don’t have an IE at hand – let alone different versions.

NetRenderer to the rescue! The German company GEOTEK offers a service that renders Web pages on the fly in IE 5.5, 6 or 7 as PNGs. So there is almost no need for VirtualPC/Parallels/etc anymore. While you will only see the upper 740 pixels of the page in question and are not able to interact with it you can still check if positioning and basic styles work out fine. Very handy i must say. Something i have looked for for quite some time.

You can make it even more handy if you are using things like Sogudi for Safari or Firefox’s Quick Search. Typing “ie http://www.anarchitect.org” into the addressbar would then show the page at NetRenderer as rendered by IE.

The makers of BibDesk, a wonderful open source bibliography manager, have just released Skim, an application that allows you to annotate, highlight, and evalue scientific papers that come as PDFs. The tagline of Skim is “stop printing and start skimming.” That is actually something i have looked for for a long time. Skim follows an interesting approach and takes reading papers to a new level. It has got some pretty neat features – read what one of the developers Michael O McCracken has to say about it in his blog. Also try it out if you have Mac OS X running. I can’t wait to include Skim into my reading/writing workflow. My internship thesis comes out in it really well ;)

Oklahoma based Janet has got a lot more gear on her Cafépress shop called Radical Militant Librarians Unite! - Good stuff. Now back to work.

We – Bubi, Joe and i – have ‘just’ talked about a mechanical apparatus that would be programmed to prepare coffee in the morning just like this breakfast machine in the first Back to the Future movie that even included preparing an egg. Well, now that we are living in the wonderful world of the web 2.0 we can get quite a lot of inspiration by viewing clips of Rube Goldberg machines. Bubi – a bright mechatronics student – has just send me this one where a tea bag is finally thrown into a cup – after detouring a marble around a labyrinth of things. I would like to add some Japanese jewels of Rube Goldberg machines with impressive mechanics, materials, and music. More of these kinda things on Google Video or YouTube. DIY at its best.

I really enjoy doing nightshots these days. In fact, i have used my camera (canon ixus 400, sometimes also sold as powershot or elph) almost exclusively with the extended exposure feature lately. I am sure other digicams have it, too. So instead of walking my camera during the day, i get her out during night. The colors are so much different. If you have a (digital) camera at hand you should really try it out. The ‘technique’ is dead simple:

Wait until it’s dark outside. You could read a book or talk to your flatmates in the meanwhile.

Walk around your neighborhood and find a nice scene to take a picture of.

Extend the exposure time according to need or gusto.

Place your camera on a steady surface, e.g. the ground. Tripods are also great, but not always at hand.

Do it. Take the picture.

Too easy. It is all about experimenting with your photographic device. But just a few more notes, to get you kick started:

Color the sky. Cool effects are possible with the sky being almost black. With extended exposure it will turn red, purple and/or blue.

Let it rain. Wet surfaces will make your result far more colorful.

Cars suck. But when it comes to nightshots they add the essential effect of red and yellow light lines.

Do it often. Take more than one picture of a given scene with different exposure levels. This way you decide later what suits you best.

Money, money. Use some coins to adjust the angle, especially if you put the camera on the ground.

Those nightshots that i’ve uploaded to Flickr have not been edited in any way. It’s just extra long exposure goodness. If anybody reading this has some results, please leave a link. I reeaally like nightshots. Ooops, its getting dark outside. Gotta go.

Thanks again to the Ente who has prodded me to the night mode feature of my camera and to ClobS who has ignited my appreciation of nightshots a few months ago by showing his nocturnal view on Santiago.

I was going to blog about that some weeks ago, and now that cybernotic was faster, i just add some quick thoughts. There seems to be a wave of (influential and advanced) Mac users switching away from the Mac as Apple gets bigger and starts doing Microsoftish things. The two articles that started this discourse were by Mark Pilgrim and Cory Doctorow. The main reasons stated for leaving the Mac behind were the decreasing quality of Apple software and that the data created or maintained with this software often becomes an “undocumented binary black hole” as Mark has put it.

I am still happy in regard to the software. Mac developers eat usabilty every morning with their breakfast so that the software i use allows me to be pleasantly productive – apart from my daily procrastination. Even though Apple seems to become more evil on some parts, they still have the lead in designing an innovative system with the user in mind.

I would be happier if all my personal belongings (e.g. pim data) would be stored in well-documented xml, so that staying with the Mac is not a matter of a vendor lock-in. Of course it would be also cool if we see some more open sourcing – not very likely.

I would be a lot happier if Apple would turn itself into a self-ruled collective where the designers, programmers and factory workers work under fair conditions with a good pay – not at all likely. Furthermore the side-effects on the environment and world regions in crisis need to be considered when producing computer hardware. Yet those latter complaints also count within the Linux world (more on this here).

Right now i don’t have the patience to switch, but i am sure the day will come. The FLOSS world has quite a few things to offer. The most obvious is the open nature of a thriving community that is devoted to creating software. While Mac fans get nervous (incl. me) waiting for the next keynote by Steve Jobs to listen to his words, the open source community gets work done through a compellingly open process. While Mac OS X still is technically more innovative, Linux & Co is socially, politically, and economically far more progressive.

You always should know where you’ve got your towel – well, at least today. Otherwise you might miss the chance of a lifetime to have participated in the internationally celebrated Towel Day in 2006 which happens to be today, May 25th. I have recently talked to Marco about Douglas Adams having been also a mac aficionado and now the day of the commemoration of the Hitchhikers’ series comes along. Grab your towel and put up your thumbs.

More and more hackers and hackresses leave their computers turned off these days to turn their attention to a completely lo-tech pastime activity. They get their knitting baskets out filled will needle and yarn goodness and do the thing that might as well change the whole world. Some weave streetart, others knit anti-war protests and a few even start magazines devoted to the next big thing. Those webs of yarn neither need electricity nor wi-fi – just commitment to the cause. Today products of knitted fabrics of wool seem to be just as pervasive as air. There is even apparel completely made of yarn. If you ask me this is what i would call grid, everywear, or ubiquitous technology. In the future we will overcome dull necessities like electricity, internet, or computers. We will all knit together a warmer, fuzzier and more interwoven web of wool. Leave all tech lingo behind you and start to use those open APIs available in every thriftstore.

If you are enthusiastic about information visualization and want to get a bit inspired, don’t look through all of the examples posted on visual complexity. Otherweise you might as well feel a bit dizzy or disconnected. They have 315 projects categorized with screenshots, description and the link to the corresponding page. For me it was sufficient keeping the mouse on the next-link to keep me from working. The picture above is a rotated screenshot from the index page.

Now that i am enrolled in a advanced – i am still blushed – Spanish course at the Goethe Institut in Santiago i can really kick of my studies in regard to the Spanish language. Even though the other three estudiantes in el curso de español seem to be some steps ahead i think it will be a good way to improve mi español.

There are several ways one can prepare a stay in a country with a different language besides formal courses. In my case i did tandem meetings with a Mexican girl in Magdeburg. For me this worked like a alarm clock for awakening my sleeping Spanish abilities that i once acquired in school. The idea is that two persons meet on a regular basis talking both in mother languages and the new one to be acquired. In this way the process of learning and teaching a language is combined. I think i will do this here too. Vamos a ver.

Furthermore i also did employ – claro – web 2.0 technologies. In this case it was podcasting. If you are into computer and internet things this one is for you: Latin Tech Talk. A podcast about information technology held in Spanish via Skype by several Latinos discussing the latest developments in the tech world. The good thing for beginners: technical terms often remain in English, so it is possible to follow the course of the conversation vaguely even though you might not understand all words.

In another podcast i learnt that reading a book still helps even if you almost understand nothing. You get accustomed to co-occurrence of words and the order in sentences. So much about my amateurish insights in learning a language.

After Ente has put up panoramas from our Sweden vacation i had to try it out, too, as i also took quite a lot panoramic pictures last summer. I found an elegant tool helping doing the stitching process for MacOSX. It is called DoubleTake and it worked really well. It worked that good, that i have played around with quite a few panoramas which i posted onto a designated wiki page.

After i got Gobby compiled and working some weeks ago, today Bubi and i played around with it and we were really thrilled how seamless it works. He had the unique IP-address to host the session and i just entered his IP, the port, my username and my text color. After that we wrote within the same document and could differentiate what is written by whom. Now we should be able to collaborately write protocols at the meetings of the local anti-war group.

It works pretty much just like SubEthaEdit, yet it is available on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, which makes it far more usable, of course. I have just sent the second eMail to the Codingmonkeys asking what their plans are in regard to Gobby. I would be really pleased if they would sit down together to make SubEthaEdit and Gobby talk to each other. The eMails remained unanswered, yet, i am sure this idea is well on their radar. While real-time, collaborative editing is still in the beginning, it will become big. But the more the developers are cooking their own soups, the less it will prosper.

For the time being, Gobby seems to be the way to do it. On the Mac it is available via DarwinPorts. It will take some hours, but it is worth it.

It is the free and scaled down BBEdit that won’t replace SubEthaEdit on my side. It is actually quite ugly. Yet, it is AppleScriptable and now serves me as an integral part of the AppleScript droplet i will use from now on for massive replaces across many HTML files that happen to be encoded in Unicode. If you want to use it too, here it is: fnr.zip (contains find and replace.app). It requires TextWrangler.

I have just looked a bit into Wordpress’ podcast functionality and it seems pretty straightforward. While this is all for fun, i will add posts with audio and/or video files attached to them on a irregular basis from now on. Don’t expect anything seriously entertaining or enlightening. It is just for my experimenting pleasure. I am testing it with iTunes 4.9, yet it should work with any podcatcher. The nice thing about iTunes is that you can also watch the movie files. So this is what you need to do, if you want to subscribe to the Anarchitect podcast:

copy the feed link to the podcatcher of your choice

or, if you use iTunes, click this link

Your podcatching application is supposed to show only those posts that include enclosure tags and the corresponding files. Or at least this is the way i expect it to work. So, if you encounter any troubles or even positive experience, don’t hesitate to comment.

Even though i have been taking photographs on a regular basis for six years now, i have not really seriously considered doing films or documentaries. Besides a few attempts such as the short movie pixellemabelle #1 i don’t have experience in doing so. Yet, now that i have a new digital camera that is able to record small, lowquality videos i could actually experiment a bit. Why not doing some vlogging? This is my first attempt. It is a short nature film:

The Word Nerds: This is an awesome show produced weekly covering words, their etymology, modern usage, and social implications. Very good! They are three eloquent teachers in the U.S. covering English, Latin, German, and other subjects.

IT Conversations: Most of the time this is actually not a ‘classical’ podcast, since it features many recordings of speeches at big tech conferences. But it has also interviews with people in the IT in general.

You can download the shows within the browser or you can subscribe to them with a podcatcher application, such as iTunes. Enjoy.

On the follwing weekend there will be another interesting conference: ‘Wikimania 2005: The First International Wikimedia Conference.’ In Frankfurt, Germany, wikimedians from all over the world gather trying to figure out where their big thing and the related projects are heading. On Deutschlandfunk there was a small report (which unfortunately isn’t available online). It said that the conference is mainly going to touch three important issues: language, scaling, and the semantic web. Only the latter would already be reason enough to go to Frankfurt and listen to the talks, yet i will be off with Bubi to the Mediterranean coasts of Italy, France, and Spain. It seems that at least two talks of the semantic web series deserve closer attention. The first was a proposal for a semantic language that could be used within the Wikipedias: ‘WikiOnt: An Ontology for Describing and Exchanging Wiki Articles.’ The other looks like a proposal for enhancing wikilinks with some information on the semantic relation between the linked articles: ‘Wikipedia and the Semantic Web – The Missing Links’. While i haven’t read the articles — i still have to pack stuff for the trip — i am as noted before very excited about taking the Wikipedias onto another, specifically: a semantic, level. I will print out those proposals and read them during the trip.

As i have invested into a new (but used) digital camera for the upcoming summer trips the time has come to say thank you to my old beloved digicam: the Kodak DC 240. For almost six years she has filled the galleries and accompanied me on trips and stays in other countries and on another continent. I can remember that in the first months of our relationship — she with her flash and i with my photographical eagerness — have really strained the patience and tolerance of our contemporaries in Gregory and Dallas, South Dakota. As we got older a serenity in this regard has arrived and the average frequency of new private galleries slowly decreased from about 2 galleries per month to only about a half. Nevertheless, we continued taking pictures from cities and landscapes wherever our feet respectively the camera bag took us. Even though she was technically half-broken for the last 5 years, due to some rough mosh pitting in Stan’s mocha, i never considered giving up on her. Taking into account how old she is and what she’s been through she’s still in an awesome shape — she just grew comparatively large and clunky. The time for her has come to rest a little beneath the newton, so that i can get back to her to get nostalgic once in a while… But before i do this, we must praise her good deeds: according to the ‘About’ panel she has captured 45724 pictures and fired 7481 flashes. Unbelievable. So long, farewell, and thanks for all the pix…

The official handover ritual includes picturing each other:

One good thing about the new camera, a Canon Ixus 400, is that this is a model which still had CompactFlash as the memory card type. Which means i’m still able to use my old cards. All the new Ixus models have slots for SD cards. But this was not the main reason for the purchase. The Ixus is smaller and takes far more better pictures, as i think. Here is a sample picture shot in Frankfurt am Main:

Nachtrag
Schneller Fehlschuss: beim obigen Link fehlt der Schrägstrich hintendran. So funktioniert der Testpodcast:

pcast://www.dradio.de/rss/podcast/interviews/

Auf dass D-Radio&-Funk die Verwendung von Podcasts ausweitet.

And surprisingly: it still works great. Handwriting recognition and backlight and Newton OS 2.0 … It takes 4 regular ‘walkman’ batteries to make it mobile. The big problem though is that there is no connection between my computer and the newton. It doesn’t do USB or anything even fancier such as Bluetooth. It has a serialport and infrared… Furthermore Apple has discontinued support and software development, e.g. for syncing it with contemporary pim-apps, such as iCal and the Addressbook. So there is no ‘official’ way syncing it via osx with modern macs. But there are some third-party efforts underdone in keeping our newtons on the road and going. Once i have managed to create a physical connection between mac and newton syncing should work. Here is a list of sites devoted to the pda that had all but the support by Steve:

newtsync.com: syncing the newton with the mac

WikiWikiNewt: the place for all things newton

Newted Community: “bleeding green since 1999”

Rumors about a new pda by Apple regularly pop up since Apple stopped the newton. They’ve got everything to bring an ‘iPad’ out — if they just wanted it …

Since the previous, free version is still available and working, I guess i stick with the free one for a while.

sudo /usr/local/bin/vpn_uninstall

Worauf dann die Eingabe des Adminpassworts folgt. Auf die Frage: „Are you certain that you wish to uninstall the Cisco VPN client?“ sollte mit ‘yes’ geantwortet werden und auf die Frage „Do you wish to remove all existing profiles and certificates?“ wäre ein ‘no’ sinnvoller.

sudo /System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN/CiscoVPN restart
