Ziemlich cool.

Wörter sind sowieso was tolles.

Now that i am enrolled in a advanced – i am still blushed – Spanish course at the Goethe Institut in Santiago i can really kick of my studies in regard to the Spanish language. Even though the other three estudiantes in el curso de español seem to be some steps ahead i think it will be a good way to improve mi español.

There are several ways one can prepare a stay in a country with a different language besides formal courses. In my case i did tandem meetings with a Mexican girl in Magdeburg. For me this worked like a alarm clock for awakening my sleeping Spanish abilities that i once acquired in school. The idea is that two persons meet on a regular basis talking both in mother languages and the new one to be acquired. In this way the process of learning and teaching a language is combined. I think i will do this here too. Vamos a ver.

Furthermore i also did employ – claro – web 2.0 technologies. In this case it was podcasting. If you are into computer and internet things this one is for you: Latin Tech Talk. A podcast about information technology held in Spanish via Skype by several Latinos discussing the latest developments in the tech world. The good thing for beginners: technical terms often remain in English, so it is possible to follow the course of the conversation vaguely even though you might not understand all words.

In another podcast i learnt that reading a book still helps even if you almost understand nothing. You get accustomed to co-occurrence of words and the order in sentences. So much about my amateurish insights in learning a language.

Since i got this mobile audio device which brand name made it into a major neologism of these days, i am also testing podcasts. I do think there are quite a lot good podcasts out there, yet i have focused on only two that i more or less follow along:

The Word Nerds: This is an awesome show produced weekly covering words, their etymology, modern usage, and social implications. Very good! They are three eloquent teachers in the U.S. covering English, Latin, German, and other subjects.

IT Conversations: Most of the time this is actually not a ‘classical’ podcast, since it features many recordings of speeches at big tech conferences. But it has also interviews with people in the IT in general.

You can download the shows within the browser or you can subscribe to them with a podcatcher application, such as iTunes. Enjoy.

On the follwing weekend there will be another interesting conference: ‘Wikimania 2005: The First International Wikimedia Conference.’ In Frankfurt, Germany, wikimedians from all over the world gather trying to figure out where their big thing and the related projects are heading. On Deutschlandfunk there was a small report (which unfortunately isn’t available online). It said that the conference is mainly going to touch three important issues: language, scaling, and the semantic web. Only the latter would already be reason enough to go to Frankfurt and listen to the talks, yet i will be off with Bubi to the Mediterranean coasts of Italy, France, and Spain. It seems that at least two talks of the semantic web series deserve closer attention. The first was a proposal for a semantic language that could be used within the Wikipedias: ‘WikiOnt: An Ontology for Describing and Exchanging Wiki Articles.’ The other looks like a proposal for enhancing wikilinks with some information on the semantic relation between the linked articles: ‘Wikipedia and the Semantic Web – The Missing Links’. While i haven’t read the articles — i still have to pack stuff for the trip — i am as noted before very excited about taking the Wikipedias onto another, specifically: a semantic, level. I will print out those proposals and read them during the trip.
